Roger’s Review of Wilder on the Taylor:
The Taylor is a world class fly-fishing river, I have not fished on the Wilder stretch of the river but have fished numerous public stretches, floated the river several times and guided on the private stretch below the dam. I have fished in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and I can say unequivocally that the Taylor River is a world class trout fishing river.

The Taylor is very similar to the Frying Pan River in that they both are tail water rivers, high elevation rivers and have large fish under the dam. The Taylor River is unique because of the spectacular setting/beauty and the number of quality fish per mile. Most of the best rivers in Montana and the west are larger lower elevation rivers while great fishing the setting is more desert like than the Taylor.

Private access is definitely unique, rare, and special, there doesn’t seem to be many places like that out there and considering proximity to Gunnison and Crested Butte I do feel that it is unique.

I have hunted elk my whole life, I have hunted in the Matchless area North and East of the Wilder property. The area around the Taylor River is large steep country with great elk habitat because it has all aspects needed for such, food, water and lots of security cover, large areas for elk to get away and grow big. I am not familiar with the access from the ranch but we have a similar situation on our ranch in Northwest Gunnison County and the importance of private access cannot be understated. Gunnison National Forest may not have as many Boone and Crockett bull elk as in parts of Arizona or New Mexico but it makes up for it in the shear numbers of elk that far exceeds most national forests and all other states.
