July 3 fire station groundbreaking brings together canyon residents and project partners
Independence Day weekend was the perfect opportunity to gather residents of the Taylor Canyon, Spring Creek and Crystal Creek areas, representatives of the Gunnison County Fire Protection District and community partners for a Taylor Canyon Fire Station groundbreaking. Approximately 175 were on hand for the afternoon celebration that included plenty of blue sky, delicious barbecue, homemade pies, cool refreshments, polka music by Pete Dunda and Ron Kibler, and of course a shiny red fire truck.
Construction of the 3,000 square-foot, three-bay facility, located on County Road 742 between Jack’s Cabin Cutoff and the turnoff to Spring Creek Reservoir on land provided by Wilder on the Taylor, officially began in early June. The nonprofit Taylor Canyon Fire Station, Inc. has raised more than $600,000 of the $850,000 cost to date and continues to seek donations and volunteer firefighters. Key partners include Big C Builders, Gunnison County Fire Protection District, Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley and Community Banks of Colorado.
To the residents who reside in the areas northeast of Almont, the Taylor Canyon Fire Station will mean quicker emergency response times as well as the ability to easily secure insurance. Taylor Canyon Fire Station will be the first and fastest response to save the lives and property for services to the Taylor Canyon.
