August Fly Fishing Report

During the last 2 weeks, we have had several guests and owners fishing at the Wilder and catch rates on our 2 miles of private Taylor River have been phenomenal. 20 – 30 fly fishing dry fly sessions have been common and the fish populations in the Taylor river are astronomical. Approximately 75% of the fish we catch are wild Browns, 23% Rainbows and about 2% native Cutthroats. Trout populations are estimated at about 6,000 per mile and this is done with no stocking.

Our stretch of the Taylor River can provide dry fly fishing like it was 30 years ago and many of our recent guests have said that they have never before experienced anything like it! When you are standing out in the river and see 50 fish rising all around you, you will know what they mean.

Wilder on the Taylor Fishing Report for early July 2013

July Fly Fishing Report

Early July 2013 – Taylor River flows peaked in Gunnison County on or near the 10th of June this year and fly fishing conditions are now perfect with all rivers dropping fast and clear. It looks to be another low water year for Western Colorado but at the Wilder we are fortunate to have guaranteed flows of between 250 and 350 cfs on our 2 miles of the Taylor River through early October. This is a great level to fish the Taylor as it is very wadeable and in these conditions the fish show a particular fondness for small dry flies.

Currently on the Taylor River at the Wilder, flows are at 375 and should be slowly dropping to the 300 level over the next couple of weeks. Water temperatures are in the mid forties and gradually warming. The water is clear and bugs are starting to hatch.

Taylor River WOW! The latter part of the summer and early fall fishing has been outstanding. The beginning of August was warm with minimal clouds, which made for tough dry fly fishing.
